The Building & Home Improvement Expo's exhibitor, Limestone Australia has been given the honour of being selected as one of the principle suppliers for the highly prestigious Chelsea Flower Show in England.
This esteemed Australian entry is designed by Ian Barker and will be constructed by a team of landscapers from Melbourne headed up by Matt and Steve from Apex Landscapes. Limestone Australia has been selected as the supplier of walling and paving elements of the display with their Western Australian Cream Limestone and Western Australian Donnybrook Sandstone "Banksia" respectively.
The theme of this garden is the journey of the HMB Endeavour and the botanical discoveries that were made on this voyage in the southern hemisphere between 1768 - 1771.
The voyage was primary based on scientific discovery included a team headed by Botanist Sir Joseph Banks whose purpose was to collect and document flora and fauna from the various lands they visited and discovered. On this voyage the east coast of Australia was mapped for the first time and Banks' notable collection of flora and fauna became the largest offshore English collection of its day.
This garden is a celebration of Banks' voyage and is intended to engage the visitor in their own journey of discovery.
Ian selected two products from Limestone Australia to be used in the garden to form the walling and the paving element of the display.
The Walling
PRODUCT Western Australia Cream Limestone
Limestone was selected to form the backdrop for the garden and to represent the cliffs of the imposing and sometimes treacherous Australian coastline. Its presence is to "ground" the garden. The stone will be grouted using selected cream mortar and sealed in a specially developed tinted limestone sealer to create an aged stone effect. The stone was adhered to sheets of structural ply prior to shipment to facilitate speed of construction at the show end of the installation. Some sections of the wall will need to be constructed and clad on site. Filling of the gaps between the panels, grouting and aging is also required to be done on site once installed.
The Paving/Stepping Stone
PRODUCT Western Australian Donnybrook Sandstone "Banksia"
The sandstone flagstones seek to form the journey of discovery through the garden. Ian was delighted to hear the stones name was "Banksia" aptly named after the discoverer! The stone was shaped from large slabs of sandstone we had shipped to our Melbourne depot. The slab sizes were around 3000 x 1200 and subsequently shaped to form the stepping stone pattern achieved.
